Celebrating 30 Years of Hope and Housing
A Place Called Home: 1995–2025
We are thrilled to announce a major milestone—A Place Called Home is celebrating 30 years of providing compassionate care and support to individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the City of Kawartha Lakes and the County of Haliburton.
Since opening our doors in 1995, we’ve remained deeply committed to our mission: offering safe shelter, essential services, and a pathway to stability for those in need. What began as a small grassroots effort has grown into a vital community organization—one that thousands have turned to in times of crisis and transition.
💙 Our Journey, Our Impact

New Build, New Future.
The Design
Working with MVW Construction and Architect Glenn Wilcox, we have developed a plan to a new shelter that provides individual rooms as well as space for A Place Called Home to provide better services to those in need.
The Build.
Starting April of 2021 we will tore down our existing administrative building on Lindsay St. South. The plan is to construct the new building and have it operational by Spring 2022.
Why build new?
In April of 2020, with the COVID-19 on the rise, our agency was faced with the reality that our existing shelter couldn’t meet the necessary requirements to keep our residents safe.
Our current shelter was the result of thousands of hours of volunteer labour and broad support from the community. The conversion of these buildings was a massive undertaking and have provided shelter to thousands of people. Unfortunately, when these were developed, a pandemic just wasn’t part of our planning process. Double rooms, shared bathrooms, living spaces and dining areas all make COVID transmission a strong possibility to it was decided to operate the shelter out of a local motel to ensure safety.
We have completely renovated our existing shelter buildings into new transitional rooms, providing further stabilization to our clients moving our of our shelter.
This project relies on support from you. Donate today.
